The Hidden Tax: Task-Switching Costs

Every time you switch from one task to another, your brain pays a "switching cost" — the cognitive residue of the previous task lingers, degrading performance on the next one. Research by Sophie Leroy (University of Washington, 2009) coined the term "attention residue": your mind stays partially stuck on Task A even after you've moved to Task B. The effect is measurable for 10-20 minutes per switch.

  • Morning anchor block first. Protect the first 90 minutes of your day for the most cognitively demanding task. This is when your prefrontal cortex is freshest — and before anyone can schedule meetings over it.
  • End-of-day review (5 minutes). Before closing, move unfinished blocks to tomorrow and adjust. The system fails when you abandon it after one bad day; the review is the repair mechanism.
  • Theme days optional but powerful. Monday = deep work, Tuesday = meetings, Wednesday = creative — this reduces setup cost further by grouping similar cognitive modes.

When NOT to Time Block

Time blocking collapses for roles that are inherently reactive — ER doctors, customer support leads, parents of toddlers. If you can't control when interruptions arrive, use a "time boxing" variant: designate available windows and fill them reactively, rather than scheduling fixed tasks. The principle — a container for work with a hard stop — still applies.
